The Volcanic Islands has an appendix by Sowerby and includes a description of 6 species of corals from the Palaeozoic formation of Van Dieman's Land. Geological Observations includes a description of the tertiary fossil shells from South America by Sowerby together with a description of the secondary fossil shells from South America by Edward Forbes. Coral Reefs contains Darwin's theory of the formation of coral reefs which, with slight modifications, remains the accepted explanation.
