The Nikon I was introduced in March 1948 and produced to August 1949 with approximately 759 units being made. The camera was unusual in having the non-standard 32 x 24mm. film format which was the principal reason that few found their way to the United States. The format was not compatable with standard Kodachrome mounts which used the usual 24 x 36mm. format.

According to serial number information published by Rotoloni this camera was produced in March 1949 as part of a batch of 85 cameras numbered 609351-609435. The inclusion of the original bill of sale and condition makes this an exceptional example of the camera.
