SEAN O'CASEY (1884-1964)
A 2pp. a.l.s. by O'Casey, dated Tingrith, Station Road, Totnes, Devon, August 7th 1940, to Morley Horder, discussing a sponsor: "He unknown to me backed my first play here. He was a great character irresponsible, careless, immoral; but a great character ... I go hail for no-one (if that's what you want) ... They were an erratic family; but, like all of us, they have to live somewhere." The failure of his play, "The Star turns Red," to get a public performance does not disturb him: "I'm afraid Dartington isn't interested in my plays and I'm not in tears over it." He has another play, "Purple Dust," coming on in New York ... G. Jean Nathan thinks it "highly imaginative & quite movingly beautiful" I hope he's right;" together with a copy of an amusing letter in O'Casey's hand from a reader of the "Picture Post." (2)
