The 18-gun sloop H.M.S. Rose, 398 tons, was built at Portsmouth and launched on 1 June 1821. Allotted one of the oldest names given to any warship in the Royal Navy - at least twenty-two vessels have carried the name Rose since the first was recorded as a "king's ship" in 1222 - she remained in the fleet for thirty years, her most notable service being in the Adriatic in 1827. On 27 October that year, a large allied fleet under the overall command of Admiral Sir Edward Codrington engaged the combined Turkish-Egyptian fleet in Navarino Bay and defeated them in what was the very last battle of the age of sail. It was a pivotal action in the history of war at sea and one which resulted in the emergence of Greece as an independent nation. After playing her role in this historic event, Rose spent the rest of her career on more prosaic duties until she was withdrawn and broken up in 1851.
