A pair of French gilt-metal-mounted ebonised and brass inlaid dwarf side cabinets of broken D-shaped outline, each with inset portor marble top, above central panel door with oval silvered metal panel of neo classical maidens within ribbon surround, flanked by laurel leaf and acanthus gilt mounts, the bowed sides with ribbon-tied trophies, on turned toupie feet, the oval panels possibly replaced, mid 19th century, one stamped E.H.B. and stencilled G twice, one stencilled C twice and G once and with label The Bailleu Collection, 393 2. -- 47in. (119.5cm.) wide, 16in. (41cm.) deep, 41¾in. (106cm.) high.
The initials E.H.B. probably refer to the well known dealer Edward Holmes Baldock who specialized in French furniture and supplied many of the most important collectors of the 1830's and 1840's often adapting 18th century pieces to meet his clients' particular needs. His initials were more usually branded. (2)
