BOYCOTT, Geoffrey (b. 1940) -- A short letter to John Arlott, dated Yorkshire County Cricket Club, 16 September 1973, requesting "the profile on me which you so kindly agreed to write"; a more detailed 2pp. letter to Arlott, dated 21 September 1973, explaining his hatred of spectacles and their adverse influence on his personality, and affirming that his loss of form in 1969 had nothing to do with his adoption of contact lenses; a further letter to Arlott, dated 4 October, reading: "Absolutely delighted with your article. You have obviously gone to a lot of trouble -- in fact my family feel you have studied me very well indeed! I have shown it to one or two friends and their opinion is that you have a remarkable feel and insight into G.B."; a final 2pp. letter, dated Yorkshire County Cricket Club, 12 January 1976, telling Arlott of his forthcoming book: "aimed at the young cricketer with articles by me on Captaincy, Field Placing, Gripping the Ball, Wicket Keeping. Throughout the book are 60 illustrated strips or cartoons on batting, bowling and fielding -- similar to the Gary Player Golf Class .... To go with all this we would like a preface on me and to my mind the best was your article in my Benefit Brochure. I wondered if you would allow me to use the enclosed piece -- just a part of what you wrote -- as I believe it is very perceptive and such a clear exposition of my batting ... it would enhance the book for us to have a piece by you on me"; together with a random selection of correspondence from cricketers and commentators to John Arlott, including 2 t.l.s. from C.L.R. James, a t.l.s. from Frank Tyson, giving an estimate of the strengths and weaknesses of the M.C.C. Touring Team to Australia in 1974, letters from Colin Cowdrey and a letter from C.S. Marriott, enquiring why Charlie Griffiths has given up using his "deadly yorker" with a carbon copy of John Arlott's reply attached. (a lot)
