Cobbett's letter opens: 'Dear Sir, Your at once kind and affecting letter reached me last Thursday noon just as I was proceeding to Church to attend the baptizing of my youngest Child. I have seldom met with anything that gave me more heartfelt sorrow. I respected & loved Swann most sincerely. He was a man after my own heart. Sound in his principles, independant in his mind, & frank in all his expressions. To the puntuality of a tradesman he united the liberality of a gentleman ....'
