Suzuki Juzo notes eight prints from this rare series of actors off-stage and dressed in street clothes. One of these is a portrait of Nakamura Denkuro IV, who died in Kansei 11 (1799). On this basis, in addition to the drawing and signature style, the set can be dated to circa 1798/99. See Suzuki Juzo, "Toyokuni," Ukiyo-e Taikei vol. 9, (Shueisha: Tokyo, 1975), nos. 23, 24, 175 and 176, for another impression of this design and for three others from the set.
