The trophy was presented to Major Gustavus Henry Spencer Fowke on his retirement as Captain of Leicestershire Cricket Club in 1927.
Fowke was the younger brother of Sir Frederick Ferrers Conant Fowke, 3rd Baronet and heir to the Lowesby estate in Leicestershire. Gus, as he was known, served in the South African War, 1900-1902 and during World War I, when he became a Major in the Gordon Highlanders.
A diamond set fox brooch was presented to his wife Kathleen at the same time (see Lot 418)
