In 1928, Roerich was in Kullu in the West Himalayas.

"He continued to portray legendary holy men and deities as he had in his "Banners of the East" series. In Arjuna (1937), the disciple of Krishna is shown blasting a path through the mountains that will lead him to the hot springs of Manikaran. As he directs his outstretched arms toward the mountain it miraculously splits open and emits a lightning-like beam of energy." J. Decter, Nicholas Roerich, (London, 1989) pgs. 183 and 185
