Leon Leleux, the first owner of this painting, was the brother of the painters Adolphe and Armaud Leleux, genre and history painters in the mainstream nineteenth century tradition. Armaud was particularly drawn to Swiss scenes and his work can be seen in museums in Geneva as well as Montauban, Paris and Toulouse. Adolphe was made Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in 1855 and his works can also be seen in museums in Paris, Antwerp and Dijon.
