ROOSEVELT, THEODORE, President. Typed letter signed ("Theodore Roosevelt") as President, with some seven words added in his hand to the text of the letter, to Robert Roosevelt ("Dear Uncle Rob") of New York; Washington, D.C., 31 October 1901. A PRESIDENT HARKS BACK TO NEW YORK'S TAMMANY HALL POLITICS. 1 page, 4to, small chip in blank right-hand margin. "Your letter really pleased me. I was immensely interested in the comment made by Mr. [Richard] Croker, and I wish to assure you that I value it. It was from an expert! Do come to Washington and bring your family...." Croker was (1841-1922) a notorious Tammany Hall Democratic boss whose hand-picked candidate had defeated Theodore Roosevelt in the 1886 Mayoral race. "The keypoint of Croker's political theory was the spoils system, as developed and practiced by Tammany" (DAB).
