Born in Paris, Jean-Adolphe Beaucé was known for painting military subjects. In pursuit of such subjects, he followed the French army to Algeria, Syria, and Mexico before returning to France around 1870. This painting, signed and dated 1858 was painted seven years after he is thought to have actually been situated in the Province of Constantine.
