The Eglinton Tournament was an attempt to re-create a medieval tournament and was held at Eglinton Castle, Aryshire in 1839. Regrettably heavy rain spoiled much of the proccedings and the young Lord Eglinton was ruined by the expense. EH Corbould was present and made several paintings and watercolours of the scene, as well as a series of prints. Corbould was a prolific watercolourist, particularly of historical subjects and was appointed "instructor of historical painting" to the Royal Family. As a result many of his finest works are in the Royal Collection.
