The present painting represents one of the four Arts and is based on the famous set of The Four Arts commissioned by Madame de Pompadour and executed by Carle van Loo in 1752-3 as overdoors for the Salon de Compagnies in the Châateau de Bellevue. Numerous versions of the originals, now in the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, were painted attesting to their popularity.
