A study for the head of Demophoön in Phyllis and Demophoön, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1907 and now apparently missing. Both the picture and a composition sketch are reproduced in Anthony Hobson, The Art and Life of J.W. Waterhouse R.A., 1980, p. 127, figs. 123-4. The painting is in reverse to the sketch, which shows the figure of Demophoön facing left, as in our drawing. It is not clear whether Waterhouse changed the direction of the composition or the painting is reproduced back-to-front
