Lear wrote his inscription in ink over pencil, and seems to have made a mistake by transcribing his pencilled 'Jany' into 'July': by July 1867 he was back in England. He may also have mistaken the actual size, though here the ink inscription follows that in pencil. This watercolour seems to have been done later the same day as lot 171, but El Assirat, as El Ayerat seems also to be transliterated, .... downstream from Menshëeh rather than between Menshëeh and Gergeh (or Girga). Lear had already visited Gergeh in 1854, both on the way up the Nile and on his return
