This 1855 view of Magdalen represents the then western boundary of the college. Beyond the entrance are St. John's quad, the chapel and the great tower.

The entrance gateway was designed by A.W. Pugin in 1844, replacing the seventeenth century one by Nicholas Stone. Although Pugin made plans for the College School after the Grammar Hall, just west of the college wall, burned down in 1828, they proved too costly, leaving the gateway the only work executed by Pugin in Oxford. His gateway was pulled down in 1880-4, making way for St. Swithun's quad, whose buildings by Bodley and Garner now occupy the foreground of the Pyne's watercolour. Carvings from both the Stone and the Pugin gateways are now preserved in a room at the foot of the great tower
