The richly carved buffet-display cabinet with its linen-fold and tracery panelling, crocketted pinnacles and corbel figures reflects the 'Old English' or 'Gothic' style promoted by A.W.N. Pugin's 'Gothic Furniture in the Style of the Fifteenth Century', 1835; revived some years later by 'Art Industry, Furniture, Upholstry and House Decoration, published by G.W.Yapp. The latter served as an Assistant Commissioner at the 1851 Great Exhibition, where Pugin's Mediaeval Court had received great acclaim.
