The trestle-ends' addorsed sphynx monopodiae, emerging from acanthus foliage in the arabesque manner, derive from 16th Century ptototypes, such as the Metropolitan Museum's celebrated Farnese table, while the fluted scroll-brackets relate to furniture of the 17th Century.
