A GEORGE IV GREY-PAINTED DOUBLE BED in the Gothic taste, the headboard surmounted by a red-painted and parcel-gilt Viscount's coronet with foliate and strapwork enrichment upon an urmen collar and tasselled pillow supported upon a channelled ogee pediment with scrolling acanthus above a yellow cotton-lined padded back between plain side posts, the front post with octagonal domed Gothic-arcaded cupolos above Gothic-panelled finials with spreading bases joined by a Gothic-panelled footboard with moulded top-rail, the rails with entrelac and patera-panelled frieze above a later arcaded base with turned finials, re-decorated with signs of original gilding beneath, the coronet possibly associated, restorations and with box-spring and fitted mattress, variously inscribed overall

Designed in the early 19th century 'romantic' or 'antiquarian' style, the bed's short gothic-arched posts and its foliated cresting are inspired by the 'St. Edward's Chair' in Westminster Abbey. They also relate to a pattern for a 'State Bed' published by George Smith in his Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808, pl.
