Conceived in the manner of an antique 'krater' wine-vase, this pedestal-supported cistern with gadroon-reed bowl and fluted stem relates to a pattern illustrated by Thomas Hope in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. XIII and adopted by Messrs. Gillows of London and Lancaster in the 1820s. (See Gillow MSS. 29 Nov 1826, Westminster Public Libraries, no. 3556)
