The overall design is inspired by a Pendule á la manière égyptienne, exécutée pour l'Espagne illustrated in Charles Percier and P.F.L.Fontaine's Receuil de Décorations Intérieures, I801, pl.VIII. Percier identified the seated figures as the clefs du Nil, .. indiquent le tems. They represent Hapi, God of the Nile, who was annually invoked to procure the flooding of the river.
