Lot Essay

These 'vestals', emerging from 'herm' shafts on stylobate plinths reflect the 'antique' manner promoted by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. In turn these were inspired by Louis XVI fireplace jambs in the Egyptian style. A pair of andirons of this exact model were sold anonymously, Christie's London, 25 February 1993, lot 6.
