The verse in the cartouche on the back reads fa-allahu khairun hafizan wa huwa al-rahman al-rahim (God is the best protector, the almighty, the merciful).
Three other Indian talismanic shirts have been on the market in recent years. One, at Spinks (Spinks 1980, no.78) was catalogued as Sultanate. The other two have both appeared in these rooms (21 November 1986 lot 84 and 28 April 1992 lot 78), of which the first was dated AH 11?8 (seventeenth century AD). All three have the same arrangement of panels as is seen here, together with the large roundels on the breast and the pointed or rounded panels below. They differ from Ottoman versions of the same garment in the textual arrangement and in their square rather than tapering cut.
