Lot Essay

Nineteenth century inscriptions on labels on the stretchers record the sitters as 'Joachim Delelée écuyer conseiller Sécretaire du Roi Receveur Gal d. domaine d'Artois Epoux de Jeanne Ag.. Bataille Beau père de Pierre Grégoire Eulart Sr de Grandval' and 'Brigite Ansart Epouse de Pierre ... .... Bataille Procureur Gal du Roi au conseil d'artois Belle soeur de Grégoire Eulart écuyer Sr de Grandval'.

In a letter of 20 February 1990, Dominique Brême confirms that the late Marquis de Lastic accepted the attribution to Largillière, dating both pictures to the first decade of the eighteenth century, the portrait of Brigitte Ansart c.1704-5 and that of Joachim Delelée c.1705-10
