Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks gave up a priest's daughter he had won on the advice of the seer Calchas, but arrogantly demanded the slave girl Briseis, property of Achilles. Pallas Athena restrained the fury of the heroes, appearing from a cloud and grasping Achilles by the beard.
