Fripp was the grandson of Nicholas Pocock (1740-1821) and began his career as a portrait painter in Bristol. In 1834 he travelled on the continent with William Muller (1812-1845) and in 1845 was elected O.W.S.
The Via Mala is approximately ten miles north of the Italian border in the Graubunden region of Switzerland.
