Lewis toured Spain from the summer of 1832 until April 1834; he was in Granada from September to November 1832. He used drawings made there for two publications: Lewis's Sketches and Drawings of the Alhambra, 1835, and Lewis's Sketches of Spain and Spanish Character, 1836.
The Puerto del Vino stands on the south side of the Plaza de los Aljibes (Square of the Cisterns); it is so called because the space on the ground floor was used to house wine from Alcalá. It was built for Muhammad II (1272-1302) of the Nasrid Dynasty, though the eastern façade, seen here, was rebuilt under Muhammad V (1354-1391).
