Cleveley took lessons from Paul Sandby, R.A. (1730-1809) and first exhibited in 1767. He was draughtsman to Sir Joseph Banks on his expedition to the Hebrides, Orkneys and Iceland and worked up many of the drawings of his brother James Cleveley who sailed with Captain Cook. The watercolour shows a frigate; on the right is a Dutch trading vessel and on the left a small hoy.
