2° (364 x 230mm.). Ruled in red throughout. Engraved title (old brown stain to small sections of upper margins of leaves Ll1-Ss4). CONTEMPORARY LONDON RED MOROCCO GILT FROM THE WORKSHOP OF SAMUEL MEARNE, the covers with an overall design incorporating black-stained and gilt fillet panels, a central gilt and black-stained arabesque, the gilt ROYAL CYPHER OF CHARLES II (repeated twice) and a mass of various small tools and rolls (including drawer-handle, vase cornerpieces, foliage sprays, etc), the spine in seven compartments with raised bands, the compartments with alternating overall designs either based around gilt and black-stained strapwork, or gilt and black-stained drawer-tools around a central flowerhead, marbled endpapers, g.e. with A CONTEMPORARY FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF THE ROYAL ARMS surmounting the Royal Motto, with four flowers and a bird above, four flowers below (ties lacking, the covers pierced a number of times by the fastenings for mounts (no longer present), bands slightly rubbed, corners bumped), modern cloth case. Provenance: CHARLES II,supplied 'for the king's own use' to the Closet in the Chapel at Whitehall; Thomas Glover, Minister of Hawkhurst, Kent (armorial bookplate, dated 1735).
