Engraved frontispiece. Contemporary red morocco gilt BOUND FOR JONAS HANWAY by his second binder, wide floral border with winged hour-glass tool at corners, enclosing a paralellogram composed from a double row of star tools, with a centrally placed profile head of Britannia with the motto 'O Save Me Save Me' surrounding it, six compartment spine with raised bands, black morocco lettering piece in one the others with floral tools, comb-marbled endpapers, g.e. Provenance: Standert (contemporary inscription).
A FINE (?)PRESENTATION COPY. Hanway, together with Robert Dingley and others founded the Magdalen Hospital in 1758. He first muted the idea in his A Letter to Robert Dingley, Esq., being a Proposal for the Relief and Employment of Friendless Girls and Repentant Prostitutes (London, 4°, 1758). He wrote extensively about the various philanthropic works in which he was involved and used at least two binders to produce highly individual bindings for his own use or for presentation, often employing tools of his own design.
