We are grateful to Professor Riccardo Lattuada for the attribution, made from photographs.

Farelli, a native of Rome, moved to Naples where he became apprenticed to Andrea Vaccaro (1605-1670). He won his first important commission in about 1655, for a picture representing The Vision of Saint Bridget, which shows the influence of his master. The present picture, however, is closer in style to his later figurative work and, in particular, to the frescoes which he executed in 1663 for the Palazzo del Comune, Pisa. In the latter, the influence of Luca Giordano and Mattia Preti is particularly noticeable.
