Georges Despret along with Henri Cros was one of the pioneers re-exploring the ancient pâte-de-verre process.
Owing to general ignorance of this exacting material, early pieces such as this bowl, display a similarity of form and technique to that of ceramics. This results in a tendency for them to lack durability and confidence in modelling, though they do exemplify for the first time the wonderful translucence and rich matt surface that were to be the hallmarks of his best pieces.
