The furniture in this and the following four lots was designed by Edward Barnsley and made in his workshops between 1925 and 1929. They were all purchased by the late Cyril Franklin. The workshop archives record details of the wages for the craftsmen, which vary between 9d. and 1s.8d. per hour, the hours worked and cost of materials, as well as the details given in the respective footnotes.

The wood for this pair of carvers (Ref. No: 1925/3) and the six dining chairs (see following lot) was cut out and prepared by Edward Barnsley himself; the chairs were then made by Charlie Bray and Walter Berry. The original cost in total was £50.7s.8d..
