This pheasant was found in the mountains of east China bordering on the Himalayas and skins were sent to England by Sir Frederick W.A. Bruce. They were first described by G.R. Gray in 1864. Subsequently other skins and living birds were brought to Europe in considerable numbers.
The male and female are depicted nearly lifesize.
