The bird was illustrated over forty years earlier by Elizabeth Gould in A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains in 1831, but Gould thought that another plate was needed in The Birds of Asia to depict the well-defined markings of this species.
This pigeon was found in the Himalayas. Gould quoted from T.C. Jerdon, 'It is met with chiefly towards the north-west, and is stated to frequent rocky heights and sequestered valleys, from 10,000 feet to snow-level, in large parties. It feeds in the fields, returning to the rocks to roost, and is said to be shy and wary.'
The pigeon is depicted lifesize.
