T.C. Jerdon recorded that the Red-headed Bunting was locally distributed throughout various parts of India. It was found among hedges and on cultivated land near scrub or bushes, where it would retreat to roost during the heat of the day.
The male has a rusty red head and throat, the female has a pale brown head. Both are depicted lifesize on a flowering branch of the wild crab tree.
