Gould commented that this species was similar to the Grey-capped Stonechat of the previous illustration (see Asia, IV, pl. plate 28), but lacked the buff plumage colouring under the tail. The specimens illustrated came from the Crimea peninsula.

DISTRIBUTION: South-central Eurasia from Roumania east through Russia and southwestern Siberia south to northern and central Iran, Afghanistan, northern Pakistan, northwestern India and western and north-central China. Winters from Arabia and south Iran south to northeastern Africa
