This laughingthrush was one of the many discoveries by the French Lazarist missionary and naturalist, Père Armand David (1826-1900), (best known for the Père David deer at Woburn), who explored through Mongolia, Tibet and central China. It was found in mountainous country near Moupin, north-west China near Tibet.
Gould was lent the specimen by the American zoologist, Dr. D.G. Elliot, who obtained it from Père David.
The laughingthrush is depicted lifesize.
