The present relief is a bronze reduction of the large marble carved for the monument to Comtesse d'Agoult, who wrote under the pen name Daniel Stern. The plaster and marble versions were exhibited at the Salons of 1876 and 1877 respectively; a plaster model is in the Musée du Mée.
