A paraphrase (Schiff's term; see S. 1171-2) of the figure of Matthan, St. Joseph's grandfather, painted by Michelangelo in one of the lunettes of the Sistine Chapel, Rome.

The inscription, similar in form to those on many of Fuseli's drawings, implies that the drawing was done in 1789 in a place beginning with 'L'; in view of Fuseli's specific references on other drawings to such places at Somerset House and Queen's Row London might seem to be too generalised a location, but Fuseli had used 'R' for Rome
