The ball finials clasped by leaves are a recurrent motif in the documented ouevre of John Linnell, appearing on a set of armchairs supplied to Robert Child for Osterley circa 1768 and on a set of seat-furniture supplied to the Duke of Argyll for Inverary Castle circa 1775-1778 (H. Hayward and P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, London, 1980, figs. 72, 87 and 89). The crestings on these chairs are also closely comparable to those on the suite of seat-furniture supplied circa 1775-1776 for the Tapestry Room at Osterley (op.cit., fig. 92)
