Pietro dalle Campane, son of Gaspare and sometimes known as Pietro Campanaro, was active in Padua between 1479 and 1496. A bell in the Museo Bottacin (op.cit.) testifies to this maker's classical influence, and like the present example it is signed in the same manner and inscribed Viva San Marco. As was common with the production of hand bells in Padua, the patrons were often Venetian and, in keeping with the taste of the time, collectors of an Antiquarian inclination. Consequently, Pietro dalle Campane decorated his bells with fine motifs derived from Antique gems, medals and mythology. The present bell being a graceful and appropriate testament to the myth of Orpheus and his music.
