THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN
Lots 55-64 were originally in the collection of Drs Hermann and Margaret Burg who were both well-known historians, collectors and dealers in Germany during the 1920's and 1930's. They had a gallery in Cologne up until the early 1930's. A number of books and papers were published by them during this period including works on Greek, Roman and Egyptian minor arts. After having moved to Holland, where they worked closely with the Leiden Museum, the Burgs finally settled in London in 1938. Here they continued to acquire antiquities for major musuems and private collectors. Margaret Burg travelled extensively in the near East after her husband died in 1946 and continued adding to her own private collection until her death in 1957.
