Wilson painted several versions of the Ponte d'Augusto with the hills of San Marino in the distance. The prime version is in the St. Quintin Collection at Scampston Hall and according to the account book there, was painted before 1759 together with the pendant 'Torre delle Grotte'. W.G. Constable, Richard Wilson, 1953, under no. 99a, lists several other versions, all of varying sizes and with differences in the details, at Dunedin, the Fitzwilliam, the Ashmolean and the Lady Lever Art Gallery. Wilson exhibited 'The Bridge at Rimini, with the Republic of San Marino' and its companion 'Temple of Citumnus' at the Society of Artists in 1761, and the subject was engraved by Farington for the Twelve Original Views in Italy, published by Boydell in 1776, although this differs in some details. Drawings of the bridge are in the Oppé and Ford Collections, and another was in the William Esdaile Sale of Christie's in 1838.
