Private R. Pennington died of wounds on 27.2.1900, received the same day at the Battle of Pieter's Hill. In the fighting to relieve Ladysmith, which occurred the day after this final action at Pieter's Hill, the South Lancashires lost one Officer and 10 men killed and three Officers and 81 men wounded. Pieter's Hill was the Boers' main position and the attack carried by the final charge of the South Lancashires against their trenches. Their Commanding Officer, Colonel O'Leary, was killed during the assault and his last words are reported as being, "Remember, men, the eyes of Lancashire are watching you".
