These wall-lights evolve from a 1770 design initially attributed to Richard de Lalonde, then attributed to Jean-Louis Prieur. The design is now conserved in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu (79 GA 179) and illustrated in Decorative Arts, The J. Paul Getty Museum Handbook, Malibu, 1993, p. 180, fig. 304, as well as in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, band I, Munich, 1986, p. 172, fig. 3.5.3.
A pair of wall-lights of a similar design, but with three lights, appear in an aquarelle dated 1784 depicting the Grand Salon of the château de Chantilly. A pair of wall-lights of that model is conserved in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu (74 DF 3) and illustrated in H.Ottomeyer, P.Pröschel et al., op. cit,
p. 172, fig. 3.5.4.
Four further related pairs of wall-lights of this model are recorded, with only minor differences:-
