This is only the fifth of several dozen letters written by Leopold Mozart to the printer of his celebrated Violinschule before its publication in 1756. As soon as he received proof-sheets, he sent them back with letters of corrections and emendations. The present letter concerns some of the earliest proofs. Leopold was a most methodical student of German linguistics and grammar, here quoting Gottsched, the author of the standard work on the German language. While this correspondence was in progress, Leopold announced the birth of a son (Wolfgang Amadeus) to J.J. Lotter in a letter dated 6 February 1756: the child was born on 27 January.
Leopold Mozart's Violinschule is the outstanding 18th-century instruction book on violin playing and made its author famous throughout Europe.
This letter is published in Mozart Briefe und Aufzeichnungen, edited by Wilhelm Bauer and Otto Erich Deutsch, 1962.
