UNPUBLISHED AS A FULL ORCHESTRAL SCORE. The only published versions of this work are for pianoforte reduction and solo instruments (Simrock, London and Hamburg, 1977, and Musica Rara, London, 1976). The New Grove (London, 1980) does not list an op. 88; the Fifth edition (London, 1954) incorrectly lists op. 88 as a Concerto for Two Pianos. This work is in fact op. 88A.
Bruch wrote this double concerto after he retired in 1910 from giving masterclasses in compostion at the Berlin Academy. He had held the title of professor there and was vice-president from 1907-1910, after his predecessor Joachim's death. We have been unable to trace, however, a record of when this piece was first performed. The present manuscript is heavily marked and appears to have been used as a conductor's score
